On My Magical Practice, and Spiders
Mar. 11th, 2021 01:32 pmSpiders are weavers, and in the Norse pantheon they are affiliated with Frigg, Odinn's wife and deity of wisdom and foresight. She is herself a weaver, and has a close relationship to the three Norns: Urð, Verðandi, and Skuld.
We would say that they are simply past, present, and future, but in the Norse tradition these are more active. Urð comes from Wyrd, the word for "fate," a concept which in the Norse tradition includes obligations and can be handed down through family lines. Verðandi derives from the word for "becoming" - it is not a passive moment, but an active process, a being and moving-with. Skuld derives from the word for should or ought - the future is an extension of our obligations.
I am a Spaekona, roughly translated as "Seer" (Spae is divinatory magic that originates with Freja), but I do very little work with Skuld, and no ritual work with Urð. I am a seer of Verðandi , and one who has given her voice in ritual several times. It means sitting in the tension of the moments between the long line of our many lives and actions and what we must do in the next moment, that is not here yet.
I took the spider for my name and symbol out of consideration for the fate-weavers and my great love of storytelling. We press our imprint on the universe when we tell stories.
But I'm also here if you're hoping for a little guidance from fate. I have significant practice in rune readings, and I am happy to serve in Verðandi's place for you.
